Errors in statistics could lead to misinterpretation.

چکیده
In reviewing "The Use of Low-Load Prolonged Stretch Devices in Rehabilitation Programs in the Pacific Northwest" by Nuismer, Ekes, and Holm (AjOT, July/August 1997, pp. 538-543), I found several notable errors in the results. For example, when computing statistics for change in range of motion (ROM), a zero was mistakenly used instead of the reported -10 (Table 1, p. 541) for Subject 7. Table 1 in this letter shows the corrected statistics along with the previously published statistics. Also note that the standard deviation of age for all subjects should be 22.5 years and not 24.5 years (Table 2, p. 541). Although these mistakes only have a minimal effect on the change in the statistics, the potential for misinterpretation is present. For example, for the neurological group, the 95% confidence interval for the change in ROM is correedy (9.5, 45). The interval width is considerable, and one could not even say that the change is significandy more than 10°. However, by using the reported incorrect standard deviation, the 95% confidence interval would be calculated as (12,45), indicating that a change in ROM is significandy more than 100. It can be surprising to naive observers that statistics from different research studies concerning the same issue can produce very dissimilar or contradictory results. In order to resolve this paradox, many people conclude that statistics are not actually reliable indicators of reality. Those versed in statistics, however, understand that statistics rely on assumptions. Proceeding from differen...

BACKGROUND Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has become an important tool for diagnosing optic nerve disease. The structural details and reproducibility of OCT continues to improve with further advances in technology. However, artifacts and misinterpretation of OCT can lead to clinical misdiagnosis of diseases if they go unrecognized. EVIDENCE ACQUISITION A literature review using PubMed com...

متن کاملUncertainty Analysis A practical guide
During the DELPHI project a first attempt was made to standard-ise the way uncertainty analysis was carried out. However, some of the documents that were produced contain errors w.r.t. the treatment of systematic errors and could easily lead to a misinterpretation of the underlying theory. Therefore Philips Research and CQM decided to produce a document that deals with this subject in a more pr...
متن کاملEarly identification of hERG liability in drug discovery programs by automated patch clamp
Blockade of the cardiac ion channel coded by human ether-à-gogo-related gene (hERG) can lead to cardiac arrhythmia, which has become a major concern in drug discovery and development. Automated electrophysiological patch clamp allows assessment of hERG channel effects early in drug development to aid medicinal chemistry programs and has become routine in pharmaceutical companies. However, a num...
